This gun can be taken apart easily, once you get the hang of it, and it is just as easy to reassemble. Watch out for the pressurized magazine spring, and be sure to wear proper protection. Work slowly and accurately – you don’t want to mess anything up. The pins, bolt, trigger group, and carrier are all very durable and easy to handle, but they are also small. There are a ton of them, and the most well-known ones belong to the Wingmaster series or Express series.

Federal Low Recoil slugs produced a very respectable group at these longer distances, especially from a TAC-14. That being said this gun is much smaller and lighter. If size is an issue, a TAC-14 packs a significant punch.

That wood furniture TAC-14 may well join my 870 and vintage .16 Model 11 on the Browning patent that was my Dad’s. …and while not ideal for long distances it excels at close range and is easy to use/maneuver. I’d rather have one of these or a mossberg variant than a full size long gun for self defense in a house or smaller space. One of these down a hallway or stairwell in a house would be quite destructive towards any intruder intent on pushing through.

As you’d imagine this is not a replacement for a real shotgun with a stock. It’s slower and harder to shoot in every way. The only thing that might have made it better is if Remington had used the 870 Wingmaster model rich blue finish over the 870 Express-style parkerized finish. I can attest my original Model 870 TAC-14 had some of the rust-when-exposed-to-air finish that some Remington budget guns have unfortunately become known for. This particular model doesn’t have that issue.

I can confidently say they are working towards having a better matte blue finish and getting rid of the common rusting problems. If you’re able to get ahold of the Federal low recoil 8 pellet double aught buckshot, it makes this beast as tame as a kitten. I thought I had a squib the first time I shot one.

Remington 870 Home Defense

I’ve never any pain from shooting this gun due to the pistol grip design. What I’m about to say about the gun’s performance on the range will largely seem negative, but I want to get out in front of that. It’s a challenge to handle, especially aimed buckshot, but that’s where the fun comes in. The wood looks great and maybe it’s the hipster in me, but I love wood on my shotguns. The forend has the corn cob texturing just like the older Remington 870s, thought it lacks the glossy appearance of shotguns of yesteryear.

7+ lbs is not a particularly light shotgun, by the way. It’s about the right weight for a 12ga of this size. I recently ought a HD shotgun, looked at the 500, 870, but bought the Benelli, just fit me better. I’ve also discovered that the metal trigger guard and housing on “high end” 870s can,also be dented and even cracked if dropped.

Honestly, Remington has cheapened those "Express" models terribly. These things always looked like liquor store hold up guns to me. The increased capacity should have been standard when it was introduced, Rem has lost a lot of sales over one less shell.

I would tell you about the tight groups but you wouldn’t believe me. Amazingly, the groups are identical between my 18” Remington Wingmaster and my Tac-14. All of my home defense and truck shotguns are loaded with them.

After getting those repaired it was still running like junk so he just replaced it with a bottom ejecting browning shotgun. Having put about 1000 rounds through both systems on trap I find that the 500 is a bit less balanced and the action is a bit more stiff. If I was going for a cheap clays gun I’d go 870 but most other tasks 500. They are both shotgun legends and while I have my preference towards Mossberg I would trust both of them, assuming I didn’t get a freedom group ruined gun. But being left-handed and kind of a cheapass, any pump gun I’ve bought has been a Mossberg, simply because that tang safety you don’t like is ambidextrous.

When you rack the 870, the gun feels solid and well-built. When racking the Mossy 500, it feels like it’s about to come apart. While the finish and design on the 870 is sleek and solid, the 500 has some exposed mechanics and a strange slotted lifter design that I just don’t like. Other things come down to personal preference, like my partiality for the Remington’s cross bar safety as opposed to the Mossberg tang-mounted safety. But overall, the Remington is still a clear winner. The pump-action Remington 870 is the classic shotgun in the minds of most people because it’s the one they have seen and been around most often.

With the polymer stock on my Express it was an easy matter to purchase a short or adjustable stock to fit. If you can swing it the Police, even used, is a great option but I have one complaint. It is very hard to find a short walnut shoulder stock for the Police. You will have to have a gunsmith shorten it if necessary based on your stature. My opinion is the 870 is a great utility HD shotgun. I've had my 870 police magnum for 20 years now, and I'm very happy with it.

There is something about wood that is just pleasing to the touch, unlike synthetic furniture. I bought a Mossberg 500 almost a month ago and it gave me trouble with the loading mechanism getting stuck. It was easy to get it unstuck with a tool, but the gun was new and I did not expect it to have such a flaw. I tested the gun several times and it was still having the same issue. I also shot the gun 3 different occasions and on the second and third time shooting the shells were getting stuck/jammed. This was easy for me to fix on the spot, but is another problem a new gun should not have.

The sound of the pump action itself is loud and intimidating. And as Bill Burr would say, it's got a good spread. They are also incredibly affordable compared to most any other type of gun including handguns. If you are going to get a 870 for home defense. If you are looking for a good HD gun go AR15.

Gun Review – Remington Model 870 TAC-14 Hardwood

I now have a full 7+1 capacity without hunting for a 20″ barrel and the extra weight that accompanies it. I put a leftover sling on it and now have it as one of my HD guns. If I ever decide to go hunting I can just swap barrels and pull the extension off and add a plug. I saw the Norinco and bought it, its fit and finish are top grade, I can find no flaws in wood, metal, blued finish or fit. Express models have matte blue-black bead-blasted metal parts, available in hardwood, laminated hardwood or synthetic stocks. MrMcGinnes, I am in contact with Travis Pike and he has agreed to do an article based on information supplied by me on the history and development of the original Marshals Service Short Shotgun.

This gun makes the express model look like garbage. It's a more expensive option, but well worth the money over any cheap ass express model you could buy. My most recent Mossie purchase, joining the Tactical Turkey Gun and Shockwaves in 12 and 20, was their Retro Persuader, great fun, as well. My wife is no Biden fan, but she uses it as home protection when I travel, along with her Ruger .357 GP100, and Ruger LCR in .38.

Gunsmiths may also have some or can point you to a good shop. Used guns at gunshows can have problems so beware there. If you want to know everything about how to fix 870s get the book “The Remington M870 & M1100/M11-87 Shotguns – A Shop Manual” by famous gunsmith Jerry Kuhnhausen from gunbooks dot com. It is an amazing book with great detailed photos and troubleshooting/repair methods. I’ve put about 5000 rounds through my 870 and have never had it let me down.

For close-range, indoor home or self-defense, the Remington 870 Home Defense shotgun stoked with mini shells would be an excellent combination. If mini shells are not in your tactical mindset, the Remington 870 Home Defense shotgun is a very formidable tool when used with full-power standard and magnum loads. So, if you are a wood-n-steel kind of person, I can highly recommend the Remington 870 Home Defense shotgun. Even if you are not a wood-n-steel person, the synthetic Remington 870 Tactical version is an excellent choice. Due to the lack of recoil when shooting “mini shells,’ there is a lack of muzzle rise that would be attributed to full-power loads.

Quality and RELIABILITY

The advantage of shooting mini-shells is obviously with increased load capacity. With the Remy HD, and with 2.25” mini-shells, you get a 7+1 capacity. With 1.75” mini-shells, that capacity is upped to 10+1. With a 14-inch LOP, the fit of rubber recoil-padded stock to shoulder is near perfect for me. The 18.5-inch, cylinder-bore, 73-caliber smooth-bore barrel contributes to the 38.5-inch overall length and at 7.25-pounds empty you know that you are carrying something that will deliver the mail. The only peeve I have is, being a southpaw, I still hate Remington’s safety location.

I think I do remember something mentioned about a magnum receiver on them but my memory is not what it used to be and I haven’t started my research on the net yet in pursuit of a definite answer. Though this is an old article, and I don’t know if it sets off alerts to anyone previously involved in the comments at the time it was new, I’m hoping I may luck out with an answer. Otherwise please excuse my ignorance in regards to the age of a forum type comment section and commenting years later.

I am surprise at how accurate I’ve been with it but am not deluded thinking it is a shotgun replacement. While I had no doubt that the Remington 12-gauge Home Defense shotgun would handle full loads with aplomb, the real reason behind my purchasing the shotgun was to do some ‘short’ work. Shells did not eject on a consistent basis so sent back to Remington for repair. They polished the ejection port, still had issues so back to Remington.

I will grant that a pistol grip would preclude its use, but for now they seem to work pretty well. This type of glowing report was the main reason I bought an 870 . However, mine and a number of other new owner’s experienced jamming and locking-up of the pump when attempting to extract a shell. Seems the attention-to-detail aspect has lacked and units are being shipped with small imperfections in the chamber that causes the shell to cant sideways and jam on extraction. Numerous YouTube videos demonstrate how to hone the affected area. I contacted Remington to arrange for return/repair and they balked at the idea as I was not using the recommended Remington brand ammunition.

Their customer service was professional, but it was a little difficult to get a hold of them. Their wait times were high and sometimes the calls will drop. Because of the past malfunctions of my mossberg 500 flex, I am still going to use the Remington 870 as my main shotgun. About 3 decades ago, I spent 6 years in the Coast Guard reserves, serving as a small-boat engineer and boarding officer. When I first joined the standard shotgun was the Remington 870 with short cylinder-bore barrel and plain wood furniture. A mossberg 590 or a high quality rem 870 is nicer.

So sad with my first Remington bought for HD. Many stuffs and paperwork to straight out problem. I want to be safe and have fun rather than spend money for this type of lock-up problem. If no such guide exists, I would appreciate any advice people could give, regarding how to tell if an 870 is worn, worn OUT, or still has a good amount of life left in it. I ask simply because I wish to purchase a similar-quality gun, used, from a gun dealer/pawn shop.

It truly is an American classic and has been one for over half a century. One of my biggest questions when purchasing the new Remington 870 TAC-14 Hardwood was the overall quality since this is one of the new models after they went through bankruptcy. I really wanted to see if the fit and finish would improve or if it was business as usual with the notorious Remington rust issues. I’ve had my example for quite a while now and took it out in the cold rainy/snowy weather of Michigan with no issues so far of rust or pitting. My pre-bankruptcy Remington 870 had rust after three months of pheasant and overland hunting.
